Bannock and Clams in the Sand

With guidance from traditional Mi’kmaq knowledge keepers and storytellers, you’ll take part in the unique and time-honoured practice of preparing bannock — a beloved bread — cooked right in the sand. This hands-on experience offers a meaningful connection to Indigenous culture, the land, and the food traditions that have been passed down for generations.

As the bannock and clams slowly bake beneath the warm earth, you’ll gather around the fire to hear stories of traditional life on Lennox Island. These teachings, shared with care by local Mi’kmaq guides, offer insight into a way of life deeply rooted in respect for nature and community. Along the way, you may even learn a few words in the Mi’kmaq language, enriching the experience even further.

This is a deeply grounding and sensory cultural experience that brings people together through food, storytelling, and the rhythm of the natural world. Whether you’re preparing bannock 🍞 in the sand, tasting clams 🦪 by the shore, or listening to fireside teachings 🔥, this experience is one that fills both your heart and your belly 🧡.
