Learn about the history of Prince Edward Island's world-famous oyster industry at the Prince Edward Island Shellfish Museum in Ellerslie-Bideford. Located along the Bideford River, the museum is housed in a historic 1930s building that once served as one of Canada's first federal oyster research laboratories.
Exhibits explore the history of shellfish harvesting and aquaculture on PEI, from traditional harvesting methods to the development of the internationally recognized Malpeque oyster. Visitors can also discover the pioneering work of Dr. Alfred Needler, whose research helped restore the Island's oyster beds and shaped the future of the shellfish industry throughout Atlantic Canada.
Operated by the PEI Shellfish Association, the museum offers an engaging look at the people, science, and traditions behind one of Prince Edward Island's most important industries, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in the Island's natural and cultural heritage.
